Case Study 7 - Identifying leaders of the future for National Skills Academy of Social care

What was the brief? MCW were commissioned by the NSASC to develop a graduate assessment centre. The Academy has been set up as part of a wider initiative to develop the profile of the Social Care network and in this case to promote excellence in the provision of management and leadership training. To this end the Academy set up the first graduate recruitment scheme to develop the leaders of the future within the Social Care arena.

What did we do? MCW worked to develop a competency based psychometric (link to cympeople part of web) questionnaire which would give the panel and indication of how well the candidate fitted the profile of leader within Social Care. We developed a framework which indicated the Essential and Desirable competencies. MCW also designed group and individual presentation exercises for the candidates to carry out. The outcomes of these exercises were marked both quantitatively and qualitatively against the same competencies that were developed for the psychometric assessment so that the panel could gain a holistic view of the candidate’s performance that was easy to benchmark.

The results: Our strategic consulting to the assessment panel and the use of the psychometric which benchmarked candidates against a set of congruent competencies allowed the Academy to get the right candidates and select those candidates fairly, as was seen as extremely valuable by the client. MCW has now been asked to see the candidates through their first few years by developing a structured management and personal development plan to deliver the leaders of the future.
